ABSTRACT

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is an infrequent disease either as a part of a generalized disease or as a local entity. The head and neck areas, especially the upper aerodigestive mucosa with its abundant lymphatic tissue is by far the most common site. Plasmacytomas represent an isolated area of plasmacytic dyscrasia but occasionally can be the first evidence of multiple myeloma. Diagnosis is based on the histologic finding of a plasma cell tumor. The majority of the extramedullary forms are treated by electrocoagulation or surgical excision, or radiation, either alone or in combination. We have recently experienced two cases of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the maxillary sinus and on the palatine tonsil.
