ABSTRACT

A 47 year old male, who had lost his hearing totally without certain cause 27 years ago, was implanted with Nucleus 22 channel cochlear implant. At surgery, all of active electrodes were inserted into the basal turn of the scala tympani and then speech therapy has been performed for 1 year. At that time, encoder strategy was multi-spectral peak coding system. Closed set word length and environment sound discrimination showed 98% and 90% respectively with speech processor. Consonant and vowel confusion study revealed 96% and 93% respectively with lip reading and speech processor. Speech tracking ability was 34.5 in open set. This preliminary experience might suggest good result of cochlear implant inspite of long time total deaf.
