Vaseline gauze has been widely used in nasal packing for the control of epistaxis and intranasal operation. Since
Merocel® can be applied to the nasal cavity easily and comfortably, it has been regarded as one of the ideal materials for nasal packing in epistaxis and intranasal surgery. We have used
Merocel® for the previous three years. From Jan. 1989 to Jun. 1991, 121 patients who had had nasal packing were divided into
Merocel® packing group and vaseline gauze packing group. We observed and compared crust formation, rebleeding after packing removal, duration of packing and adhesion after nasal packing. The results are as follows : 1) The
merocel® packing group consisted of 80 patients : intranasal ethmoidectomy(INE) 32, inferior conchotomy 40, control of epistaxis 8. The Vaseline packing group was 41 patients : INE 16, inferior conchotomy 14, control of epistaxis 11. 2) Mean duration of packing was longer in the
Merocel® packing group than veseline group. 3) Frequency of crust formation was less in the
Merocel® packing group than veseline group. 4) Rebleeding after packing removal was less in the
Merocel® packing group than veseline group except ZNE. 5) Adhesion after nasal packing was observed only two cases of vaseline group. From the above results we concluded that
Merocel® packing is more effective and comfortable than vaseline packing.
