ABSTRACT

Vestibular neurectomy affords the surgeon a means to eliminate abnormal vestibular input without sacrificing hearing. Two approaches have been used popularly to section the vestibular nerve : the middle fossa approach since 1961 and the retrolabyrinthine approach since 1979. Both approaches are effective in relieving intractable vertigo while preserving hearing. Retrolabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy was performed in 5 patients with endolymphatic hydrops. Three of them had previous endolymphatic sac procedure had failed. The patients were relieved from the agonizing vertigo while preserving their hearing. We report the technical details and therapeutic results of the retrolabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy.
