Preservation of function and complete excision of cancer are one of the major concern of the laryngeal cancer of the laryngeal cancer surgery. So partial laryngectomy is good for the above purpose if it is indicated. Eighteen cases glottic cancer which contained 4 cases of the failure of radiation therapy and 18 cases of supraglottic cancer which contained 2 cases of the failure of radiation therapy were treated with partial laryngectomy, vertical or horizontal, from January, 1985 to June, 1990. The method of surgical operation was vertical partial laryngectomy in glottic cancer and horizontal partial laryngectomy in supraglottic cancer. The method and extension of surgery were different case by case. Pathology was squamous cell carcinoma in all cases. Clinical T classification of them was 5 cases were T1, 27 cases T2, and 4 cases T3. In glottic cancer, the local recurrence was 6 cases and 4 cases of them were treated with total laryngectomy. In supraglottic cancer, 2 cases of recurrence at the primary site and 2 cases in the neck, Neck dissection was performed in 13 cases of supraglottic cancer. In 6 patients who had modified or radical neck dissection concomittantly with the primary resection, 4 patients were positive for cervical metastasis, Of the remaining, 7 patients who had elective neck dissection, only one was positive cervical metastasis pathologically.
