Twenty cases of each 'Hae-Nyeou' and their control group were observed in the routine manner of the clinical otolaryngological examination. The results were those of following. The obtained percentages of the different diseases were : opaque tympanic membrane 100%, tubal stenosis 96%, deviated nasal septum 90%, hypertrophic rhinitis 66%, stenosis of the external auditory meatus 66%. Opaque drum membrane, deviated nasal septum and stenosis of the external auditory meatus were the most remarkable ones, and the stenosis of the external auditory meatus was quite unique with turgescence of the anterior and posterior walls and the floor of the canal, which was probably due to the direct continued irritation by the sea water. Pharyngeal and palatine tonsils were less affected (40 & 36%) in 'Hae-Nyeou' than in the control group (80% & 66%). Hearing was impaired in all of the cases of 'Hae-Nyeou' in the ratio of 80% under 40 decibel loss, 5% between 40 & 60 decibel loss and 15% over 60 decibel loss, while in the ratio of 5% from C² to C⁴, 15% over C⁵ and 80% under C¹. Those of the impaired hearing in 'Hae-Nyeou' must probably be considered as to be due to the thickness and cloudiness of the tympanic membrane and the pressure effect to the cochlear apparatus by the sea water.
