ABSTRACT |
The patient is a 22-year-old female who consulted the Dept. of E.N.T. of Severance Hospital, School of Medicine Yonsei University with the chief complaints of speech disturbance, dysphagia and discomfort of the throat of about 12 years duration. At the time the patient's general condition was moderate and physical examination revealed an irregular mass in the region of radix of the tongue. The mass showed an irregular surface of dark bluish yellow color and cyst-like translucency and was measured 3×1.5×0.8cm in its size. The patient was admitted and was operated under the general anesthesia. The mass was exposed by pulling out with the tongue and was added a deep transfixion suture by means of pressure with tongue depressor. Bleeding was controlled with electrosurgical unit. After an incision was made along the anterior margin of the mass it was separated from the underlying tissue by using a piece of gauze and the process was advanced posteiorly in order to remove the mass completely. The postoperative course was satisfactory. 0.3% of alum gargle solution and 0.5gm of intramuscular injection of penstrep. daily were given for 3 days. She was discharged on the 3rd postoperative day. It is regrettable that we could not follow up her condition and could not perform all the necessary examinations after her discharge because there has not been replied to the author's inquiry. The definite diagnosis was made through histopathological study of the excised tissue after her discharge.
