A Statistical Study of the Foreign Bodies in the Food and Air Passages

ABSTRACT

The statistical study was done for 83 cases with the foreign bodies in the food and air passages, who had visited the Dept. of Otolaryngology of N.M.C. and removed endoscopically, from Jan. 1965 to Dec. 1969. The result is as follows ; 1) The incidence of foreign bodies in order of frequency was coin, meat & food particles, and bone in esophagus. The most frequent foreign body in the air passages was peanut & corn. 2) In the age incidence, the 59% of all foreign bodies was under 5 years of age. The 87.2% of coin cases was under 5 years of age. 3) In sex distribution, there was no significant difference between male and female in the foreign body of the esophagus. But the air passage foreign bodies were more prevalent in male as the ratio of 2.25 : 1. 4) The ratio between the food passage and the air passage was 5.4 : 1 and the bronchial foreign bodies were more frequent in the right side as the ratio of 4 : 1. The 75.7% of food passage foreign bodies were found first narrowing. 5) In duration of lodgement, the 64.3% of esophageal foreign bodies were removed out within 24 hours and the 46.2% of bronchial foreign bodies were removed out within 24 hours.
