ABSTRACT

As a preliminary study of the articulation scores and confusion patterns of Korean speech sounds, analysis of structures and frequencies was performed on 887 speech sounds. The frequency of use for speech sounds in normal conversation is illustrated in Table. 1. There are four kinds of syllables which exist : ""CVC"", ""VC"", ""CV"" and ""V"", ""CVC"" occurred in 67.6%, ""VC"" in 22.1% and ""V"" in 2.3 %. Consequently, closed syllables composed the greatest number (75.6%) of normal speech sounds. Roughly, in initial consonants, plosive fortis and plosive aspirates occurred less frequently than others; but in final consonants, all were distributed evenly. Vowels occurred more frequently than diphthongs, especially back vowels which composed the greatest number of vowels (53.6%) in normal.
