ABSTRACT

Authors observed clinically on 64 cases of the esophageal burn at Busan National University Hospital from March 1967 to June 1973. The results were obtained as follows ; 1) Sex ratio was 34 males and 30 females, and age distribution was most frequently found in two decades. 2) 31 cases(48.4%) came in the hospital within 12 hours after ingestion and 16 cases(25.5%) came in the hospital within 2 to 7 days. 3) Vinegar was used most frequently as corrosive agent, showing 32 cases(50.0%) and lye and hydrochloric acid next in order. 4) The moment of ingestion was suicidal atempt in 45 cases(70.3%) and misdrinking in 19 cases(45.3%). 5) Esophageal and stomach washing was applied in 29 cases(45.3%) for emergent treatment, which seemed not to give any benefit to the result. 6) Of 38 cases who had had regular treatment, 30 cases(78.9%) were favorable at result and 6 cases(15.8%) were unfavorable. Esophageal burn due to vinegar resulted in good condition with regular treatment. On the other hand, esophageal burn due to lye was prone to result in not so good condition.
