ABSTRACT

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is and unusual form of plasma cell myeloma and occurs most commonly (about 90%) in the upper respiratory and digestive tracts. It is an unpredictable disease. It may remain localized. It may infiltrate and destroy adjacent tissue. It may metastasize to regional lymph nodes and other organs, or it may merge into a multiple of diffuse form of myeloma. Nearly identical therapeutic results are obtained with surgical resection, irradiation therapy or a combination of these 2 methods. Approximately 40% of cases die from their disease. Local recurrence are common and should be vigorously treated because many of these patients can be salvaged. This is a report of case of the extramedullary plasmacytoma involving the nasopharynx in a 60-year-old male who was treated surgically.
