ABSTRACT

The consideration of anatomical structures of nasal cavity and their normal variation makes it possible to diagnose properly. So far there has been carried many studies on this aspect, but we have still remained some explorative field. Therefore, the author has studied and measured the anatomical structures of lateral wall of the nasal cavity such as concha, meatuses, infundibulum, ostia of paranasal sinuses and nasolacrimal duct in 66 nasal cavities of Koreans. And the following results were obtained : 1) Each of the length and height of inferior, middle and superior concha was 4.34cm, 4.28cm, 1.98cm and 1.11cm, 1.07cm, 0.39cm, And each of the width was 0.58cm, 0.58cm and 0.33cm. 2) Mixillary ostium was opened to the centrum of infundibulum(56.1%), to the posterior portion(40.9%) and to the posterula(3.0%). Accessory ostium was observed in 22.7% of the cases. The length from anterior nasal spine to the sphenoidal ostium was 5.96cm and angle between the floor of nasal fossa and ostium was 41.07 degree. 3) Each of the length and depth of infundibulum was 2.48cm, 0.68cm and width was 0.24cm in the anterior portion and 0.44cm in the posterior portion. The shapes of infundibulum were the straight form(31.8%), round form (30.3%), posterior curved form(25.8%) and the anterior curved form(12.1%). 4) Each of the shapes and their incidences of the opening of the nasolacrimal duct was the oval form(25.8%), the semilunar form(24.2%), the spot-like form(18.2%), the tubal form(16.7%) and the slit-like form(15.1%). The length from the attachment of the inferior concha to the opening of the nasolacrimal duct was 0.54cm and the wider the opening of the nasolacrimal duct, the shorter distance and the higher the site of the opening off the nasolacrimal duct. 5) The opening of the nasofrontal duct was connected to the frontal recess(63.5%), toward the infundibulum(15.9%), into the infundibulum(11.1%) and above the infundibulum(9.5%).
