ABSTRACT

Laryngeal papilloma is one of the most troublesome tumors to manage in the field of otolaryngology, albeit pathohistologically benign. In late 17 century Marcellus Donalus introduced the tumor as ""Wart of Throat"". In 1817 Cheesmann first reported on a papilloma occuring in the vocal cord. Its etiology is still unknown. The symptoms in children are dyspnea and disturbed phonation with frequent recurrence and in adults the tumor tends to show malignant degeneration. So far repeated surgical removal and other miscellaneous expendients are in use, but there in no efficacious way to treat and the tumor is considered clinically malignant. Recently the authors experienced a substential therapeutic effect by topical spray and application method with 5-Fu following surgical removal in 7 adults and 4 children with laryngeal papilloma.
