ABSTRACT

The elongated styloid process is not so frequently encountered. Abnormally long styloid process is due to ossification of the portion of Reichert's cartilage which normally forms the styloid ligament. Excessive length of the styloid process sometimes associated with obscure complaints involving the throat. Patients frequently complain of pain in the throat increased by swallowing or of a sensation of fullness in the throat. Occasionally pain present in the side of the throat radiates to the ear and the tip of the mastoid or the neck and shoulder. Sometimes there is a sensation of food having lodged in the throat, necessitating frequent swallowing. In cases of patients with the classic syndrome the history of symptoms following a tonsillectomy is always most suggestive. Authors report recently experienced a case of the elongated styloid process in a thirty one-year-old Korean woman.
