An Epidemiologic Investigation of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in Young Adult Male - Understanding and Attitude on It -

ABSTRACT

Medical check for military service of 45,918 young adult male, aged 18 to 24, was done in Choong-Nam area and there were 1,294 cases (2.81%) with chronic suppurative otitis media. An investigation of the understanding and the attitude on chronic suppurative otitis media was performed in cases with it. The results were as followings : 1) More than half of them had understood that chronic suppurative otitis media was caused with the invasion of water to their ear during shower or swimming. 2) About half of them had experienced to take medical care by doctor in a few times and only 84 cases (6.5%) had taken the middle ear surgery. 3) 341 cases of them (26.4%) had never known that they had been with chronic suppurative otitis media before this investigation. 4) 451 cases of them had never taken medical care for chronic suppurative otitis media, because they had not known they had been with it or neglected to care the trouble of their ear in 284 cases (63.0%) and because they were in poor economic condition in 151 (33.5%). 5) 17.4% of them would not want the medical care for their ear problem or wanted only intermittent care after this investigation and 60.7% of them believed chronic suppurative otitis media could be cured by treatment. As above results, many people do not understand of neglect of their chronic suppurative otitis media. And for reduction of prevalance rate of chronic suppurative otitis media, medical education should be emphasized as well as promotion of utility of medical service.
