Acute Retropharyngeal Abscess - A Report of Three Cases -

ABSTRACT

That the introduction of antibiotic therapy has markedly reduced the incidence of retropharyngeal space abscess but made the diagnosis more difficult because of their masking effect on the classical sign and symptom. Authors experienced 3 cases of retropharyngeal abscess recently. This paper was attempt to report the case with literatural review. Case 1 : A male infant of 3 month, with the dyspnea and dysphagia. Satisfactory recovery was obtained in 8 days after the incision and drainage with adequate antibiotics. Case 2 : A male infant of 8 month, with the fever and lateral neck swelling of 5 days duration. Satisfactory recovery was obtained in 11 days after the incision and drainage with adequate antibiotics(rubber drain inserted for 4 days after I & D). Case 3 : An 8 year old male with sore throat and high fever of 3 days duration. Satisfactory recovery was obtained in 6 days after incision and drainage with adequate antibiotics.
