Between 1978 and 1983, 390 patients with carcinoma of the larynx were diagnosed in the Dept. of Otolaryngology, Cancer Reseach Hospital. The patients with T1 or T2 lesions were treated with radiotherapy or conservative surgery. 254 patients were treated by radiation for cure. 71 patients underwent surgery, 49 for cure initially and 22 for salvage after radiation failure. 203 patients(90.6%) of 224 patients(1978.1-1982.2) were available for follow up 2 years by OPD, residensy and permanent address. The two year survival rate for supraglottic carcinoma treated with RT was 3/3(100%) for stage I, 18/31(58.1%) for stage II, 5/9(58.1%) for stage III, 10/42(23.8%) for stage IV and overall control rate was 36/85(42.4%). The glottic carcinoma was 3/4(75%) for stage I, 26/43(60.5%) for stage II, 7/32(23.8%) for stage III, 0/8(0%) and overall control rate was 36/87(41.4%). An overall control rate of the primary tumor was achieved in 8/12(66.7%) treated with surgery initially and 13/17(76.5%) patients who received postoperative RT. Surgical salvage of radiation failure was 61.1%. 14 patients received additional RT for salvage and neither attempt was successful.
