A Statistical Analysis of Diagnostic Biopsy for 1430 Cases with Head and Neck Lesion

ABSTRACT

A statistical analysis for 1,430 cases of diagnostic biopsy was attempted to evaluate the general incidence rate of the clinical use of biopsy, sex and age distribution, duration of symptoms, chief complaints by location, regional incidence rate, varieties of histopathological classification in the tumors. The results obtained were as follows : 1) Among the 9,129 new patients, 1,430 biopsies were performed (15.7%), there were 1,067 tumor cases(74.6%) which consisted of 873 cases of malignant (81.8%) and 194 cases of benign tumors (18.2%). There were 363 inflammation cases (25.4%) which consisted of 82 cases of specific inflammation (22.6%) and 281 cases of non-specific inflammation (77.4%). 2) In the age distribution of tumors, there were 87.9% malignant tumors in the age group above forty. 3) In the sex distribution of tumors, there were 679 male cases (77.7%) and 194 female cases (22.3%) for malignant tumors and there were 111 male cases (57.2%) and 83 female cases (42.8%) for benign tumors. 4) In the duration of initial symptoms to biopsy of malignant cases, there were most revealed 1-3 months in the nose and paranasal sinuses, larynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx and neck, 6-12 months in the trachea and bronchus. 5) In the distribution of chief complaints of malignant tumors, there were most revealed cheek swelling in the nose and paranasal sinuses, hoarseness in the larynx, sore throat in the oral cavity, sore throat in the oropharynx and hypopharynx, mass in the nasopharynx, neck and ear, dysphagia in the esophagus, cough in the trachea and bronchus. 6) Of 873 cases of malignant tumors, there was seen most frequently in the larynx showing 208 cases (23.8%) and the oropharynx (140 cases : 16.1%) next in order. 7) Of 194 cases of benign tumors, there was seen most frequently in the larynx showing 86 cases (44.3%) and the oral cavity (59 cases : 27.3%) next in order. 8) Of 873 cases of malignancy, squamous cell carcinoma (704 cases : 80.7%) was the most frequent histologic type and undifferentiated carcinoma (52 cases : 6.0%) next in order. 9) Of 194 cases of benign tumors, polyp (61 cases : 31.5%) was the most frequent histologic type and papilloma (53 cases : 27.4%) next in order.
