ABSTRACT

Abscess of the nasal septum is more common in children than in adults and the most frequent cause is the suppuration of hematoma of the nasal septum following trauma. Authors analysed clinical, bacteriological and surgical features of abscess of the nasal septum in nine cases seen between May 1980 and July 1984 at the Department of Otolaryngology, Dongsan Medical Center, Keimyung University, The following results were obtained. 1) Six of the nine cases were boys under 14 years of age (ranging from one to 14 years). 2) Six cases were developed after external nasal trauma, and the other cases following intranasal injury and upper respiratory infection. Only one case was of unknown origin. 3) Primary symptoms were nasal obstruction and pain on the dorsum of nose. 4) Surgical drainage was done in all of nine cases, and seven had cartilage necrosis. 5) Staphylococcus aureus was the most common causative organism by culture (four cases). 6) Irregular thickenings of the septal mucosa were noted in three cases as a late sequela.
