| ABSTRACT |

A total of 268 fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology(FNABC) was done for head and neck masses at the Department of Otolaryngology, National Medical Center from May 1981 to July 1985. The 78 of 268 aspirates were proven histologically and compared with the cytologic diagnosis. Of the 78 aspirates, 43 were of lymph nodes, 10 were of salivary glands, and 25 were of soft tissue, bone, and intraoral lesions. The results obtained were as follows : 1) FNABC of lymph nodes showed sensitivity of 87.5%, specificity of 90.4%, and accuracy of 85.6%. 2) For salivary glands, the sensitivity was 100%, specificity 88.9%, and accuracy 90.0%. 2) For salivary glands, the sensitivity was 100%, specificity 88.9%, and accuracy 90.0%. 3) In soft tissue, bone, and intraoral lesions, the sensitivity was 87.5%, specificity 100%, and accuracy 92.0%. FNABC should be used more often as a very useful procedure for the initial evaluation of head and neck masses because of its high accuracy and safety.
