ABSTRACT

Mucoceles are chronic, expansile, cyst-like lesions of the paranasal sinuses. They contain sterile mucoid secretion and are limited by mucosa of affected cavity. Pathologically, a mucocele is a cystic cavity with mucoperiosteal walls limited by low cuboidal or respiratory epithelium with chronic inflammatory change. Although benign, growth of mucocele produces local bone destruction. Site of involvement, in order of decreasing frequency, are the frontal sinus, ethmoid sinus, maxillary sinus and sphenoid sinus. Ocular disturbances are among the characteristic complaints and patient often first consult on ophthalmologist. A visible swelling is usually seen at the upper medial orbital margin. Expansion of the mucocele produces displacement of the corresponing eye and eventually diplopia. Recently, we experienced five cases of mucocele, which involved the frontal sinus, ethmoid sinus, and maxillary sinus. All of them were treated with surgical procedure, and the good results were obtained.
