ABSTRACT

The use of tissue glue for otologic surgery has been advocated with increasing frequency. But all of this glue had disadvantage of being made of an artificial material that would possibly result in significant impairment of wound healing. With the introduction of the fibrin glue, a biologic material for surgery became available, which have a major advantage of complete degradation and full compatibility with the tissue. Fibrin glue has been used successfully for otologic surgery and applications in many surgical disciplines. But major problem with commercial fibrin glue is that the fibrinogen and coagulation factor XIII are isolated from pooled human plasma. Therefore the risk of transmitting hepatitis and possibly acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS) cannot be excluded. We could produce autologous tissue glue from patient's own blood, which contain relatively high concentrated fibrinogen and coagulation factor XIII. And good results were obtained upon clinical application on tympanoplasty.
