ABSTRACT |
The prominance and position of the mandible in facial skeleton predispose it to frequent trauma. Injuries to the mandible must be
managed with careful attention to the restoration of form, function, and aesthetics. We retrospectively reviewed 46 patients who sustained a total 69 mandibular fractures and who were treated at the Department of Otolaryngology, Gil General Hospital from May 1986 to May 1988 for a useful means of reevaluating our standards. The results were as follows : 1) The ratio of incidence between male and female was 2.5 to 1, and the highest incidence was in the 21 to 30 year age group. 2) The causes were alleged assaults(37.0%), motor vehicle acidents(30.4%), fall or slip(21.8%), industrial accidents(6.5%), sports related(4.3%). 3) The most common area of fractures was symphysis. A total of 69 fractures were seen in these 46 patients, 22 of whom(48%) sustained multiple fractures. These were an average of 1.5 fractures per patients. 4) 62.3%(43 fractures) were compounded intraorally and/or extraorally. 5) 13 patients(28.3%) had 24 associated injuries. The most common injury was facial or scalp laceration. 6) 58%(40 fractures) were treated with open reduction procedures. 7) There were 11 individual complication in 7 patients, the most common complication was infectious problem.
