ABSTRACT

Although the sensation of airflow has received little attention from clinician or scientists, it is likely of great importance in clinical practice. In general, the patient is more concerned with the sensation of nasal airflow than with any objective change in nasal airway resistance. So, we measured total nasal airway resistance and the sensation of nasal airflow before and after menthol spray and inhalation, after lidocaine spray, and at menthol inhalation 5 minutes after lidocaine spray. The results were as follows ; 1) The majority of 30 subjects reported a subjective improvement in nasal airflow, but total nasal airway resistance showed no significant change before and after menthol spray and inhalation(p>0.05). 2) Twenty-six of 30 subjects(86.7%) reported no subjective improvement in nasal airflow and total nasal airflow resistance showed no significant change before and after lidocaine spray(p>0.05). 3) Twenty-nine of 30 subjects(96.7%) reported a subjective improvement in nasal airflow at menthol inhalation 5 minutes after lidocaine spray.
