ABSTRACT

Peritonsillar abscess develops as an infection in a peripheral tonsillar crypt that penetrates the capsule, entering the potential space between the capsule and the superior constrictor muscle. Although among the most frequently encountered abscesses in the head and neck, its optimal management remains controversial. Currently accepted treatment policies consist of either incision and drainage, together with intravenous antibiotic therapy, or immediate tonsillectomy, or permucosal needle drainage. Immediate tonsillectomy is a safe, reliable and expeditious method for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess in yong patients with or without a pervious peritonsillar abscess, recurrent tonsillitis, or both. The procedure is technically not difficult and constitute a one-stage curative operation. Intraoperative and postoperative complications are unusual and the total period of hospitalization is reduced. After analysing the results of 23 cases of peritonsillar abscess treated by immediate tonsillectomy, we concluded that immediate tonsillectomy could be a safe and effective procedure in case of need.
