A Comparative Study between Growth State in Children and Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy

ABSTRACT

Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is one of the most common ENT disease especially in children, which should be suspected as a possible cause in the workup of the children with suboptimal growth. In order to observe the relationship of adenotonsillar hypertrophy with growth state in children, authors classified into three categories of adenotonsillar hypertrophy in relation to adenotonsillar hypertrophy status. And, adenotonsillar hypertrophied patients group were compared with control group of normal children visited at the pediatric well baby clinic about their growth state(body weight and height). The results were as follows : 1) The comparison of the mean body weight and height for age between adeno-tonsillar hypertrophy group(group A) and control group(group B) showed that the difference in body weight and height are 1.18-3.03 kg(mean difference : 1.98 kg) and 2-5.4 cm(mean difference : 3.94 cm), respectively. 2) The greatest differences in weight are demonstrated in 14 yrs old male(46.10 vs 49.91 kg) and 11 yrs old female(31.70 vs 34.70 kg). 3) The greatest differences in height are demonstrated in 9 yrs old male(128.7 vs 134.2 cm) and 8 yrs old female(122.1 vs 127.7 cm). 4) In age corrected body weight percentile distribution, the lower percentile distribution(<50 percentile) was, the greater adenotonsillar hypertrophy was : 88.6% in severe group(39 patients in 44 patients) 5) In age corrected height percentile distribution, the relation between low percentile distribution(<50 percentile) and degree of adenotonsillar hyper-rophy was less significant than body weight : 68.1% in severe group(30 patients in 44 patients).
