ABSTRACT |
Small cell carcinomas of the larynx are neuroendocrine tumors with particular pathologic, therapeutic, and prognostic connotations. Since the first description of small cell carcinomas of the larynx in 1972, there have been just over 130 patients reported in world literature but none of these reported in Korea. The tumor is thought to arise from the argyrophilic Kulchisky cells normally found in laryngeal mucosa. The diagnosis is based on the light microscopic appearance of the neoplasm and can be confirmed by electron microscopy. Systemic chemotherapy and therapeutic irradiation appear to offer the least disabling and most efficious form of current therapy. Though these carcinomas have poor prognosis, the survival of the patients treated with these modalities may be significantly improved, and some patients may be cured. The authors have recently seen a case of small cell carcinoma of the larynx. A 61-year old male who complained of odynophagia was treated by systemic chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and the result seems to be satisfactory up to date.
