ABSTRACT

Screening tests for early detection of auditory dysfunction in neonates and infants is very important because auditory deficit in infants and children have significant adverse effects on the development of language, speech, and cognitive abilities. Although auditory tests such as stapedial reflex and auditory brainstem responses(ABR) has been used for detecting hearing loss in this period, these have a few pitfalls as a screening test. But the click-evoked otoacoustic emissions(CEOEs) has benefits of rapidity, objectiveness, and non-invasiveness as a screening test. In this study click-evoked otoacoustic emissions(CEOEs) were recorded from 55 ears of 29 newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care unit because of various conditions such as anoxia, intrauterine infections such as rubella, congenital anomalies, prematurity, hyperbilirubinemia, neonatal meningitis, to evaluate validity and clinical significance of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions as a screening modality of hearing status in new born infants.
