ABSTRACT

One hundred and seventy seven patients were treated surgically for thyroid carcinomas at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Korea Cancer Center Hospital. Histopathologically, 144 cases were papillary carcinoma, 16 anaplastic carcinomas, 7 follicular carcinomas, 3 medullary carcinomas, 3 Hürthle cell carcinomas, and 4 unusual carcinomas. There was 3 : 1 female preponderance, and the mean age was 48.6 years. The mean age of patients with anaplastic carcinoma was about 12 years older than that of patients with papillary carcinoma, 59.7 as compared to 47.2 years, respectively(p<0.001). Histologically-proven loco-regional metastases were observed in 54.8%, and clinical distant metastases were found in 7.3%. The frequent metastatic sites were lung, bone, kidney, and pharynx.
