ABSTRACT

Isolation of Strptococcus pneumoniae with diminished susceptibility to penicillin have been reported with increasing frequency in recent years. In Korea, three cases of penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae was reported in 1986, then 25% of 72 cases in 1991. In order to assess the presence of penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, we collected pus from middle meatus in 191 patients who showed no response to antibiotics from November 1989 to July 1993 in Inje University, Snaggye Paik Hospital. The results were as follows : 1) Streptococcus pneumoniae was cultured in 54/191 samples(28%). 2) Penicillin resistant strains were 48/54 strains(89%). 3) Multiple antibiotic resistant strains were 16/54 strains(30%).
