ABSTRACT

Laryngeal tuberculosis is the most common granulomatous disease of the larynx. It was a common disease in the past, but became rare with the advent of antituberculous chemotherapy. The most commonly affected sites are vocal cords, false cords, and ventricle. It mostly develops from pulmonary tuberculosis. Laryngeal involvement occurs in approximately 3% of cases of moderately advanced pulmonary tuberculosis, but this incidence approaches 100% in terminal cases. The incidence of laryngeal squamous celll carcinoma in pulmonary tuberculosis patient is 15 times higher than that of the patient without tuberculosis, and carcinoma occurs fairly frequently in association with laryngeal tuberculosis. Recently, the authors performed total laryngectomy, right functional neck dissection and left radical neck dissection in patient with clinical stage IV(T3 N2c M0) of transglottic squamous cell carcinoma. But, pathological finding revealed transglottic squamous cell carcinoma and diffuse laryngeal tuberculosis with only multiple tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis(101 lymph nodes). Therefore, the final pathological staging for carcinoma was stage III(T3 N0 M0). Here, we present this coincidence of a transglottic squamous cell carcinoma with laryngeal tuberculosis, and multiple tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis with review of the literature.
