ABSTRACT |
Nasopharyngeal stenosis, or atresia, is an obliteration of the communication between the oropharynx and the nasopharynx, resulting from adhesion of the soft palate and posterior faucial pillars to the pharyngeal wall. While syphilis was formerly considered to be the most common cause, most authorities now believe that surgical trauma accounts for the majority of cases. Other causes of nasopharyngeal stenosis include caustic burns of the pharynx, diphtheria, scarlet fever, rhinoscleroma, tuberculosis and Lupus Vulgaris. Recently we experienced a case of nasopharyngeal stenosis in a 19-year old female patient due to cicatrizing diathesis during treatment of cervical lymphadenopathy with herb medicine. We performed surgical correction of this condition using Mackenty's method with a free skin graft.
