A Clinical Study of Foreign Bodies in Food and Air Passages in 217 Cases for 3 Years

ABSTRACT

Foreign bodies in food and air passages are common problem encountered in ENT field. It is accidentally occurred and is most commonly encountered in children. Authors have studied foreign bodies in food and air passages in 217 cases during the period from Mar, 1981 to Feb, 1984 at our ENT department. The following results were obtained. 1) Distribution of location was 197 cases(89.9%) in the esophagus and 24 cases(11.1%) in air passages. 2) Coin was the most frequent foreign body in the esophagus(122 cases-63.2%) others were bony pieces, meats. Beans was the most frequent foreign body in air passages(13 cases-54.2%) others were plastic toy, fish bone. 3) In lodging site of the esophagus, the first narrowing of the esophagus was the most frequent site(173 cases-89.6%). In air passages, the bronchus was the most frequent site(21 cases-87.5%), especially right main bronchus in 18 cases, left main bronchus in 3 cases. 4) In duration of lodgement, 133 cases(68.9%) were removed out with in 24 hours from the esophagus, and 10 cases(41.7%) were removed out within 24 hours from air passages. 5) Age distribution was predominent in under 5 years old showing the esophagus(122 cases-63.2%) and 22 cases(91.7%) in air passages. Over 40 years old group was showing 40 cases(20.7%) in the esophagus. 6) In sex incidence, males were than females in both food and air passages. Food passages : male : female-----99 : 94(105 : 1). Air passage : male : female------16 : 8(2 : 1).
