ABSTRACT

Primary tuberculosis of the submandibular gland is one of rare lesion caused by tubercle bacillus. However, infection can occur by retrograde extension along the ducts or by blood borne implantation. Tuberculosis of the submandibular gland does not produce any characteristic clinical manifestation and can be differentiated from other chronic granulomatous or neoplastic lesions by only histopathological examination. The most successful treatment for tuberculous infection of submandibular gland is total removal of the gland and periglandular lymph node followed by antituberculous chemotherapy. We recently have experienced one case of primary tuberculosis of the submandibular gland and report it with review of the literature.
