ABSTRACT

The fine needle aspiration(FNA) biopsy is primarily a cytological diagnostic method, but its smear will often contain tissue fragments which to some extent may allow true histological evaluation. So, with high accuracy and few complications, FNA are widely used in clinics for one of initial screening of head and neck mass. During recent three years, 84 FNA were performed on patients with cervical lymph node enlargement at Hae-hwa hospital of Korea university. The results obtained were as follows ; 1) The sensitivity of FNA for malignant neck nodes shows 89.2%, the specificity shows 97.9%. 2) The sensitivity of FNA for tuberculous neck nodes shows 40.0%. 3) The significance of FNA was not closely related with location or size of neck nodes.
