ABSTRACT |
Otitis media with effusion (OME) occurs very frequently in children. In spite of medical treatment, the most common indication of the tympanostomy tube is persistence of midddle ear effusion longer than three months which is called as chronic form of OME. The purpose of this paper is to find the factors that can be
responsible for the tympanostomy tube extrusion and the recurrence. We studied 146 ears that tympanostomy tubes were inserted on. The results are follows ; 1)
Indwelling period of tympanostomy tube was 8.3 months. 2) Recurrence rate after tympanostomy tube extrusion was 23.5%. 3) Indwelling period and recurrence
rate were not influenced by the nature of middle ear effusion. 4) Indwelling period seems to be shorter and recurrence rate seems to be higher in old children group and in the
group having previous tympanostomy tube insertion. 5) Average duration until recurrence after
tympanostomy tube extrusion was 11.5 months and shorter in previously intubated tympanic
membrane. Through this study, in children who have a history of tympanostomy tube insertion, indwelling period and duration until recurrence seem to be shrter and recurrence rate seems to be higher. Thus, this results suggest that these patients should be followed up carefully after tympanostomy tube insertion.
