Carotid artery rupture may occur after a major operation in the head and neck cancer patients or radiation therapy in unresectable tumors. Also, carotid artery rupture can come from penetrating injuries such as a stab or gunshot in the neck. Despite intensive cares, it has been high morbidity and mortality such as neurologic sequelae, strokes, episodes of rebleeding or death. In case of rupture of the carotid artery, the mental state on admission is an important factor to be considered in determining prognosis. Recently, the authors experienced one case of rupture of the common carotid artery after gunshot injury in neck which was managed without neurologic sequelae. We report this case with review of the literature.
