Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed operations in facial plastic surgery. Recently, there have been a lot of patients who have needed cosmetic rhinoplasty because so a higher frequency of facial trauma and improved socioeconomic status. The authors reviewed 80 patients who underwent rhinoplasty at the otolaryngologic department of the Seoul National University Hospital from August 1983 to July 1991 and investigated various factors such as age, sex, types and causes of deformity, methods of operation, complication, and types of materials used in augmentation rhinoplasty. The results were as follows : 1) The ratio of male to female was 50 : 30. 2) Patients were most commonly in their twenties(50 cases, 62.5%). 3) The types of deformity were : scoliotic nose, in 50 cases(62.5%) ; saddle nose, in 20 cases ; nasal hump, in 8 cases ; and cleft lip and nose deformity, in 2 cases. 4) The causes of deformities were : trauma, in 55 cases(68.8%) ; complication after submucosal resection of the septum, in 7 cases ; congenital causes, in 3 cases ; and unknown causes, in 15 cases. 5) All the 50 scoliotic noses, except for two mild cases, were managed by surgical osteotomies. Augmentation rhinoplasty was performed with inserting dorsal implants, bone, or cartilage through intercartilaginous incisions. 6) General anesthesia was preferred(60%) to local anesthesia(40%). The former was mainly used in corrective rhinoplasty, and the latter in augmentation rhinoplasty. 7) Of the 48 cases of corrective rhinoplasty, postoperative complications were found in five cases. Three cases were incomplete correction and two were postoperative saddle nose deformity. 8) Materials used in augmentation rhinoplasty were autologous iliac bone in three cases, autologous conchal cartilage in five cases, and a silastic block in 12 cases. Extrusion of implants occurred in two cases with silastic block.
