Histopathological study of vocal nodule and polyp.

ABSTRACT

Hoarseness is the common symptom and early sign of the laryngeal disease and among the cause of hoarseness, vocal nodule and polyp are the most common. A clinical and histopathological study was carried out on 111 cases that were diagnosed by vocal nodule and polyp at the dept. of otolaryngology of Ewha Womans University Hospital during the past 3 years from Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1990 and the following results were obtained. 1) Among total 111 cases, vocal nodule was 82 cases(74%). vocal polyp was 29 cases(26%), and male to female ratio was 1.1 : 1. The highest frequency of age was 4th decade in vocal nodule and polyp, as 27 cases(33.3%) and 39 cases(41%). 2) The side of vocal nodule and polyp was unilateral in 83% and bilateral in 17%, the highest incidence of the duration from the onset of symptom to visit for disease was below 3 months as 31 cases(38%) and 9 cases(31%). 3) The most common site of occurrence was anterior 1/3 of vocal cord in vocal nodule and polyp as 75 cases(97%) and 18 cases(62%). 4) Occupation of patients in order of frequency were business 48 cases(43%), house wife 21 cases(19%) and singer 18 cases(17%). 5) The epithelial changes were in order of frequency were hyperplasia 68 cases(61%), mixed type 28 cases(25%), atrophy 15 cases(14%), keratosis and parakeratosis were observed in 86 cases(77%) and 55 cases(50%). 6) The stromal changes were observed as fibrosis, vascular, edematous, hyalinization and mixed type. The results in order of frequency were mixed type 40 cases fibrous and hyalinization 24 cases(22%) vascular 1 case(1%). 7) The inflammation was nonconsiderable in 94 cases(85%) and the most common type of inflammation was chronic inflammation as 13 cases(11%).
