Clinical analysis of cystic lesions of the head and neck.

ABSTRACT

Clinical analysis of 500 cases of benign cystic lesions confirmed by histopathologic examination from January 1980 to December 1989. 1) Of 500 cases, epidermal cysts were most common(32.8%), radicular cysts(15.2%) were second and the third, mucocele(12.8%). 2) Most of the cystic lesions were found before the 4th decade with an exception of radicular cysts, found in the 6th decade. 3) There was no significant sexual different(male 54%, female 46%). 4) There were no predilection sites in cases of epidermal cysts, but on the lateral side of the neck, cystic hygroma and branchial cleft cysts were common. On the anterior midline of the neck, thyroglossal duct cysts were common. 5) The most common presenting symptom was palpable mass(66.2%) and the duration of symptom less than 1 year was most common(60.4%).
