ABSTRACT

To establish the somatoscopic measurements of the external aspect of the Korean nose, 2,739 healthy Koreans, (1705 male and 1034 female) were examined. The following values were found. 1) Height of radix nasi : The young individuals the radix nasi is low, especially in the female sex. The radix nasi is gaining more height with age in both sexes, more in the male where in the age group of 26-30, ""high"" class occupies more than half of total. 2) Form of dorsum nasi : The dorsum nasi is more concave in the younger age group in both sexes, particularly in the female. As age increases, the dorsum becomes straight, this trend is stronger in female. In male, the dorsum to become waved. 3) Relationship between dorsum and direction of bridge of nose : For straight type, the younger the more upward in both sexes. In later age trend is downward, particularly in the male sex. For concave type, the younger the more upward, especially in the female sex. The trend of becoming upward is stronger in man as age increases. For wavy type, the younger the more upward, in older persons the trend is downward in both sexes. This trend is stronger in male sex and in age group of 26-30, the upward type is only 50%. It is difficult to draw exact conclusion for the convex type, because only few of this type were exmined, however, it seems that in the younger persons the direction is more upward in both sexes, and in the older age group the direction is more downward particularly in male. 4) Apex nasi : In the younger age the apex is more obtuse than in the older age, where the apex tends to be more acute in both sexes. 5) Bulging of ala nasi : In younger persons there is less bulging. As age increases the bulging type, disappears rapidly and in age group of 26-30, there is only 17% in the male sex and 14% in the female sex. The increase of flat type is not remarkable. The increase of moderate bulging is strong. 6) Nostril margin : The conave downward type is prevalent in both sexes. As age increases, this trend is more pronounced. In 6 years of age, the concave type occupies more than half of total number and in age group of 26-30, more than 4/5. No great differences are found between the sexes, however, as age increases the even type is more prevalent in male and the convex downward type in female. 7) Insertion of ala nasi : The younger age groups more even and lower, and the older age the insertion a higher. In 6 years of age girls snow a more high than boys. As age increases the male sex prevails in the high types. 8) Deviation of external nose : In younger individuals mid-sagittal position is rather prevalent in both sexes. Deviation of the external nose is quite rare. In the older age group deviation is more pronounced, particularly in the male sex. Deviation to the right is more prevalant in both sexes. 9) Nose fundus : Mongolin type is quite prevalent in both sexes throughout the age distributions. If the principle, that I, II, III types belong to pro-european type and IV, V, VI types belong to pro-negro types, could be applied. As age increases, pro-european types are more prevalent. In the old age group this trend is stronger in male. 10) Direction of nose fundus : In younger individuals the direction is more upward and in the older the direction is more downward. This trend is stronger in the male sex. 11) Form of nostrils : The oblique oval type is quite prevalant in both sexes throughout age distributions, and in older group it becomes more long ellipsoid, spindle, or triangle. In the older the form of nostrils is less round and transverse oval, particularly in the male sex. However, these two types are rare even in younger age.
