ABSTRACT |
Gustatory sweating (Frey syndrome) is characterized by profuse sweating in the area innervated by auriculotemporal nerve. It is frequently developed after trauma or surgery to the parotid gland. In considering the mechanism of development of this syndrome, the theory of misdirected axon regeneration is accepted most widely which was first proposed by Andre Thomas in 1927. Recently we reported two cases of Frey syndrome with some literally reviews.
Case 1 : A 41-year-old male complained of profuse sweating, accompanied by flushing, under his left ear when eating. He received bullet wound on the left face 12 years ago. Under local anesthesia resection of the tympanic plexus was performed, and complete relief was obtained.
Case 2 : A 25-year-old male officer has been suffering from gustatory sweating from 3 months after trauma on the right face. Unfortunately this patient refused surgery.
