ABSTRACT |
The author has experienced a case of salivary stone in the submaxillary gland on the right side. A 48-year old man visited Chonnam University Hospital on April 7, 1966 with chief complaint of walnut sized, hard swelling on the right side submaxillary region, which was slightly tender by pressure and tumor like appearance. And also he has compained of mild pain and foreign body sensation in the pharynx. These symptoms have been gradually developed and aggravated for past 3 years. Examination revealed a small fistula (0.3-0.4 mm. in diameter) on the posterior portion of the right side mouth floor, through which a hard mass was demonstrated. X-ray study of the submaxillary gland both by simple view and sialography disclosed large shadow on the angle of mandible on the right side corresponding to submaxillary gland. The stone was removed out through the fistula which was extended upward and downward by incision under local anesthesia. The removed stone was a gray brownish, hard salivary stone with uneven surface and was as large as 3×2×2cm in size and 4.0 gram in weight. The stone was composed of principally calcium phosphate and small amount of magnesium. The patient received antibiotics and local treatment in one week after the operation.
