ABSTRACT

Obstruction of the distal esophagus by impacted meat bolus is considered on the differential diagnosis of any patient presenting sudden onset of dysphagia. The patient is usually elderly and most often has an inadequate masticatory apparatus due to ill-fitting dentures. Enzymatic digestion is contraindicated for the removal of any meat impaction in the esophagus. Direct endoscopic removal is more safe and effective method of management. Complete roentgenographic and endoscopic studies should be performed at the same stage of the management for insure accurate diagnosis of the cause of obstruction. Periodic follow-up evaluation is recommended in every patient.
