Histopathological Observation on the Chronic Palatine Tonsillitis

ABSTRACT

Author reviewed histopathologically on 85 palatine tonsils obtained from male 46. Famale 39 having chronic palatine tonsillitis. The results were as following. 1. On the surface epithelium of tonsil, no hyperplasia and no hyperkeratosis were ween in the majority of cases, but desquamation was noted in 43 cases (50.5%). But on the crypt epithelium of the tonsil, mild cellular infiltration, keratinization and epithelial defect were noted in more than half of the cases and no hyperplasia was seen in 72 cases (84.7%). 2. On the subepithelial tissue of tonsillar surface, mild cellular infiltration & hemorrhage were noted and no fibrosis was seen in 75 cases (88.2%). But on the subepithelial tissue of the crypt, mild interstitial fibrosis, cellular infiltration and hemorrhage were noted. 3. On the lymphoid follicles, severe hyperplasia of follicles was seen in 67 cases (79.7%) and few cases of follicular atrophy & hemorrhage were present. 4. The cause of hyperplasia was inflammatory in 75 cases (88.2%), simple hyperplasis in 9 cases (10.5%) and tuberculous in 1 case (1.1%).
