ABSTRACT |
Tuberculous otitis media is generally a disease of young ages. The infection of the middle ear may occur by following mechanisms : (a) extension through the Eustachian tube by coughing and sneezing with or without involvement of the lining mucosa of the Eustachian tube ; (b) hematogenous spread from an active focus, usually the lung ; (c) direct implantation through the external auditory canal and a tympanic membrane perforation. The common clinical findings are inciduous onset of painless watery otorrhea, varying degere of hearing loss, perforation of tympanic membrane, subsequent appearance of profuse granulation tissue, and other otologic complications. Authors reviewed the biopsy specimens from 320 cases of tympanomastoidectomy from 1974 to June, 1979. There were three cases of tuberculous otitis media (1%). One patient was encountered in 1974, two patients were found recently, and managed by tympanomastoidectomy and antituberculous treatment postoperatively.
