ABSTRACT |
Meningoencephalocele is an extracranial protrusion of the meninges, cerebrospinal fluid, and some portion of the brain associated with cranium bifidum which occurs in the midline of any of the cranial bones. Meningoencephalocele is usually classified by occipital, parietal, sincipital, and basal types according to the location. The sincipital type is further subdivided into nasofrontal, nasoethmoidal, and naso-orbital types. The sincipital meningoencephalocele is rare, and usually carries a good prognosis compared to the other types because of no significant neurologic deficit. A 15 year old female patient had been suffering from a walnut-sized soft compressible mass on the nasofrontal region from birth. Skull X-ray showed round bony defect on the nasofrontal area among two frontal sinuses and the root of nose. The nasal cavity and nasopharynx were intact on rhinoscopy. Visual acuity of the right eye was decreased to 0.04, and optic atrophy was noticed on fundoscopic examination. The mass which was composed of thickened subcutaneous connective tissue, fat, and dura was excised, and nasofrontal bony defect was repaired surgically by using the resin. We report this case with review of literatures.
