1,311 mild form of epistaxis which could be treated at OPD and 234 severe form which were required for admission were observed at our clinic during the period of 6 years from January 1977 to December 1982. The results obtained as follows : 1. In the incidence of patients with epistaxis ; 1) In 1,311 mild form, 3.5% among 37,855 patients treated at ENT OPD and 12.0% among 10,896 patients with rhinological problems. 2) In 234 severe form, 5.0% among 4,075 patients admitted at ENT Department and 12.5% among the 1,874 admitted patients with rhinological problems. 2. 1) Sex ratio between male and female was 1.6 : 1 in mild and severe forms. 2) Epistaxis was most frequently observed : a. in the age group of 0 to 9 and 10 to 19 in mild form. b. in the age group of 50 to 59 and 40 to 49 in severe form. 3. In etiological differentiation : 1) Among the 1,311 mild form, 516 cases (39.3%) were caused by unknown causes, 482 cases (36.8%) by local factors and 313 cases (23.9%) by general factors. 2) Among the 234 severe form, 125 cases (53.4%) were caused by unknown causes, 61 cases (26.1%) by general factors and 48 cases (20.5%) by local factors. 4. In differentiation by the induced disease. 1) In mild form, rhinitis, nasal septal deviation and trauma of nasal area were most common local factors. 2) In severe form, nasal septal deviation was most common local factor. 3) Hypertension was most common general factor in mild and severe forms. 5. The most frequent site of epistaxis was Kiesselbach's plexus in mild and severe forms. 6. The bleeding occurred more often from the left nasal cavity than right nasal cavity in mild and severe forms. 7. 1) In the monthly distribution, the number of epistaxis were greater in December and September in mild form and December and Otober in severe form. 2) In the seasonal variation, the number of epistaxis were evenly distributed except summer. 8. Among the admitted 234 severe form, mean value of hemoglobin at admission was 9.7gm% and 142 cases (60.7%) showed hemoglobin level below 10.0gm%. 9. In methods for bleeding control, anterior packing and posterior & anterior packing were most useful methods and submucous resection was performed in few cases.
