ABSTRACT |
Sudden hearing loss is defined as an abrupt onset of sensorineural hearing loss which develops over a period of hours or a few days. The causes of sudden hearing loss are generally believed to be viral, vascular or allergic but little is known about the cause of most cases. Therefore, it is difficult to justify any form treatment. Authors report ten cases of sudden hearing loss which were treated with low molecular weight dextran, steroids, antihistamines, vasodilator regimens and vitamines with brief review of literatures. The results are as follows : 1) Of the 10 cases, 2 cases have complete recovery, 1 case has incomplete recovery, 2 cases have slight improvement, 5 cases have no improvement. 2) Early treatment (within about a week of onset) have favorable results. 3) Prognosis is poor in cases of sudden hearing loss with dizziness. 4) Recovery of hearing acuity has a relatively good response in lower frequency range. 5) In deaf patients on the initial audiogram, prognosis is poor. 6) Generally, we think that the tinnitus is not concerned with hearing improvement.
