ABSTRACT

Fifty patients who had visited to OPD of Otolaryngology of B.N.U.H. from September 1982 to August 1983, treated with a series of anesthetizing blocks of stellate ganglion for sensorineural tinnitus, were studied as a link of research for the treatment of tinnitus. The results were as follows ; 1) Of 50 cases, the improvement in 17 cases (34%) and temporary improvement in 18 cases (36%) were noticed. 2) In classification according to age distribution, the effect in the younger age group was better than the old. 3) In classification according to etiologies of tinnitus, the effect of tinnitus associated with sudden deafness was best. 4) According to the duration from onset to beginning of treatment, the effect of the shorter group was better than the longer. 5) There was no relationship between the effect of stellate ganglion block and loudness and frequency of tinnitus. 6) In classification according to the number of stellate ganglion block, the effect of not exceeding than 4 serial blocks' group was worse than over 5 serial blocks' group. 7) The effect in group of stellate ganglion block combined with medication was better than in group of stellate ganglion block alone. And then it suggests that the best result would be obtained, if early stellate ganglion block was applied when combined with medication for treatment of sensorineural tinnitus.
